Description

The Woman Suffrage Cookbook is the oldest fundraising cookbook in support of women’s suffrage. The cookbook begins: “This little volume is sent out with an important mission,” which we can assume has scope beyond “cookery, housekeeping, and the care of the sick” given when and why it was published. Here is one of it's recipes.

Ingredients

  • 5 lb flour
  • 6 eggs
  • 2 lb sugar
  • 1 pint of yeast
  • ¾ lb butter
  • 1 quart sweet milk
  • ¾ lb lard
  • 6 nutmegs

Instructions

Take about 3 pounds of flour and 1/3 of sugar and stir up with yeast and 2/3 of the milk, leave to rise overnight or until it begins to fall on the top; then add in the rest of the ingredients and bake in loaves as you would bread
