Irish Soda Bread

Prep time:
10 minutes

Soda bread is a great, fast bread as it doesn't need to proof. Delicious warm, straight out of the oven!

  • 250g wholemeal flour
  • 100g plain flour
  • 50g coarse oatmeal
  • 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 300ml buttermilk

  1. Preheat the oven to 190 degrees cup and lightly flour a baking tray.
  2. Crack the egg into a big mixing bowl. Add the buttermilk and a pinch of salt (1/2 teaspoon) and whisk
  3. Add the flour mix and stir together with a spoon. Once it starts to come together, use your (clean) hands to pat and bring the dough together.
  4. Shape the dough into a round ball, place on your baking tray and flatten to a disk, 6 to 7cm thick. Score a cross in the bread then bake for 50 minutes, until a firm crust has developed.
